Abandoned newborn baby dies

AFTER five days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Benguet General Hospital, baby boy Angelo Justin died due to infection.

The attending physician, Dr. Regina Jesusa Victoria, said the baby boy was around 34 weeks old and weighs 1.63 kilograms.

Social Welfare Officer Rosina Mascay said it was the first case of abandoned child noted this year.

Last December 5, around 10:20 p.m., Raymarie Madugay Velasco, 39, a barangay health worker, informed authorities about the abandoned baby.

Velasco was onboard an AUV when she heard a baby crying. She asked her husband to stop the vehicle and told her daughter to verify where the sound was coming.

Her daughter went out of the vehicle and saw a baby at the Benguet Provincial Building 2 without clothes and intact umbilical cord.

Velasco removed her jacket to wrap the baby and brought it to Benguet General Hospital for medical treatment.

Velasco is facilitating the baby's funeral at Sabkil, Itogon, Benguet.

Authorities are still investigating the case to identify who abandoned the baby.
