Additional parking spaces eyed in La Trinidad

TO ADDRESS the traffic situation and accommodate huge volume of vehicles going in and out of the municipality, a resolution is being pushed for tapping additional parking spaces in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Authored by councilor Roderick Awingan, the local government unit is sourcing the help of Benguet State University for the possibility of allotting vacant lot for parking.

The proposal states the LGU will seek partnership with the government-controlled educational institution in providing areas feasible for parking spaces.

According to Awingan, the LGU should seek the help of existing establishments to address the ongoing problem felt by visitors particularly the community itself.

"The local government unit recognizes the importance and indispensable role of BSU in the socio-economic developments of the municipality and hence the participation and support is vital in the progress of the LGU," Awingan said.

Included in the request to BSU is the study on creating a parking area located at the back BSU Multi-purpose Cooperative situated within the 245,849 square meters parcel of land owned and controlled by the university.

The increasing population and influx of motor vehicles clogging main thoroughfares and overcrowding in existing small parking areas causes road traffic thus the need to immediately address the problem.

Awingan added the lack of a parking facility is not only felt by the municipal government but at the same time BSU and other adjacent establishments and public places.

If passed, the LGU will seek communication and agreement with BSU to create possible conditions in providing controlled parking lots thereof.

Meanwhile members of the Sangguniang Bayan raised their support for the resolution however thorough communication and agreement must be created with the management of BSU.

At present, more than 500 public and private vehicles traverse in and out of Benguet's capital town daily.
