'Auring' makes landfall in Siargao, Surigao del Norte

TROPICAL depression Auring has made landfall in Siargao Island and Surigao del Norte, the state weather bureau said on Sunday, January 8.

In its 5:00 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the center of the tropical depression is in the vicinity of Cagdianao, Dinagat Islands.

Cuyo Island in Luzon is now placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) Number 1.

Bohol, Siquijor, Negros Provinces, Southern Leyte, Cebu, Guimaras, Southern part of Iloilo and Southern part of Antique, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte including Siargao Island, Dinagat Province, Misamis Oriental, and Camiguin are under TCWS Number 1.

The weather bureau also raised the heavy rainfall advisory in Dinagat Islands, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte. The said places are under Orange Warning, in which intense rain, equivalent to four to eight gallons of water per square meter per hour, is observed in one hour and expected to continue in the next two hours.

Pagasa said the tropical depression has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 70 kph. It is expected to move northwest at nine kph.

Pagasa added "Auring" is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday afternoon, January 13.

Residents in the said area are alerted to possible landslides and flashfloods.

Pagasa advised fisherfolks and those with smaller seacrafts not to over the eastern seaboard of Visayas and of Mindanao. (Sunnex)
