Bacolod inmate falls from roof, dies

A MALE inmate died after he fell from the rooftop of the main building of the Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ) in Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City Wednesday afternoon, June 14.

The name of the 38-year-old fatality from Bacolod City was withheld.

Senior Inspector Norberto Miciano, officer-in-charge of the male dormitory of MBDJ, told SunStar Bacolod Wednesday that the inmate was gathering his clothes past at 1 p.m. when he fell from a height of 15 feet.

He was rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died around 5:20 p.m. due to severe head injuries.

“We are saddened about what happened,” Miciano said, adding that they are trying to reach the inmate’s family to inform them about the incident.

Miciano said the inmate was jailed in June 2016 for parricide and attempted murder.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR) will conduct an investigation on the incident to determine if it was really an accident or if there was a foul play.

Escapee recaptured

Meanwhile, after 10 days of hiding, one of the two escapees of the MBDJ-Special Intensive Care Area (MBDJ-Sica) in Barangay Taculing was recaptured at Purok Eucalyptus, Barangay Caduha-an in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental Wednesday.

Senior Superintendent Alberto Balauag, officer-in-charge of BJMP-NIR, told SunStar Bacolod Wednesday that Noli Dega, 39, of Bacolod City, was arrested at the house of his relative at noon.

His presence in the past three days was monitored by intelligence operatives of Cadiz City Police Station, Balauag said.

Dega was transferred to the custody of MBDJ in Barangay Handumanan.

Balauag said they decided to move him to avoid conflict with other inmates because of his offense.

Moreover, Balauag said they have information on the whereabouts of the remaining escapee Marlon Molina, 38, of Murcia town.

Balauag said that Molina is hiding somewhere in Bacolod City.

“There is a big chance that he can be recaptured soon,” he added.

Last week, Dega, Molina and Ebson Jaen, 36, escaped from MBDJ-Sica, but Jaen was recaptured just outside the jail after he got injured when he jumped from the prison wall.

Balauag said they cannot file additional charges for deviation of sentence against Dega and Jaen because they are not yet convicted.

“As a sanction, they will just be restricted from having visitors,” he added.
