Bacolod traffic cop dies in road accident

A TRAFFIC policemen of Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) was killed after he was hit by a Nissan Frontier pick-up at Hernaez Extension, Barangay Taculing Tuesday evening.

Chief Inspector Placido Gentoleo, commander of Police Station 6 (PS6), said Wednesday that Police Officer 3 (PO3) Edmund Sarad suffered serious injuries and was declared dead at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center.

The Nissan Frontier with plate number WRP 158 was driven by Antonio Chua, 45, of De la Rama Road, City Heights Subdivision in Bacolod.

Sarad was chasing at 8:50 p.m. the Nissan Frontier that was involved in a “hit and run” accident at Burgos-Lacson Streets.

Gentoleo said Sarad already finished his duty and was about to go home when he monitored that the suspect was travelling going to Circumferential Road.

He responded and caught up with the Nissan Frontier at Hernaez Extension.

Gentoleo said that Sarad might have tried to stop the driver but he continued driving and hit the policeman.

Chua voluntarily surrendered to the police and charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and damage to property were filed against him yesterday before the City Prosecutor’s Office.

Starting Wednesday, the flag at the BCPO was flown at half-staff in mourning of Sarad’s death.

Senior Supterintendent Larry Decena, officer-in-charge of BCPO, said they recognized the heroic act of Sarad.

He was already off duty, but he responded to a call and carried out his mandate as member of the Philippine National Police, Decena said.
