Bacolodnons enjoined to observe WED 2015

RESIDENTS of Bacolod are enjoined to observe the World Environment Day (WED) Friday, June 5.

The city council passed a resolution Wednesday calling for the support and cooperation of the city residents the observance of the WED 2015.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., stated that WED is the “biggest, most celebrated global day” for positive environmental action established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, and one of the principal vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

The resolution pointed out that the City of Bacolod has all the reasons to celebrate considering that as a matter of advocacy and policy, it stands for the preservation of its natural resources and establishment of a healthy and clean environment as ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change.

It added that there is a need for the Bacolod citizenry to be reminded that if the current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, “three planets are needed to sustain such way of life.”

The observance of WED celebration gives human perspective to environmental issues, empowers people to become active agents of sustainable development, and advocates multi-stakeholder partnerships in support of the environment, the resolution further said.
