Baguio council to tackle South Drive subsidence

A RESOLUTION seeking an investigation into the condition of South Drive Road has been introduced in the Baguio City Council.

The issue will be taken up during the regular session on Monday, July 17.

Michael Lawana, Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president and a member of the City Council, said in his resolution that he fears the road might collapse again. Parts of the road have reportedly sunk because of the construction of a high-rise building.

“The erosion of the ground underneath requires validation in order to avert a looming Gibraltar collapsed road in the making,” said Lawana.

In his resolution, Lawana requested the Department of Public Works and Highways, the City Buildings and Architecture Office and South Drive Village chief Maribel Cagalawan to appear before the council and shed light on the construction activities that have affected the road.

Lawana's resolution also called on building owner Eusebio Aquino and contractor EBA Construction to appear before the council and pacify the residents.

Residents in the area are blaming the construction of a high-rise building, which occupies three properties along South Drive, for the ground subsidence.

“To date, almost half of the road has already been closed due to the subsidence to the detriment of the riding public, motorists and general public,” Lawana said.

Lawana said he has received reports that the contractor is using the road and sidewalk for their equipment.

“The weight of the equipment and construction materials had led to subsidence of the ground underneath the road, causing danger to life, limb and property,” said Lawana.

He added that the problem has resulted in traffic woes.
