Baguio lawmaker backs anti-pay parking group

BAGUIO representative Mark Go backs the anti-pay parking group who oppose the construction of a parking lot in Burnham Park.

Raymundo Rovillos, chair of The Baguio We Want, said the meeting with Go over the weekend went well.

“He said he is not supporting the plan to construct car podiums in Burnham Park,” Rovillos said.

Go has pledged support to the group who are opposing the proposals of Councilors Benny Bomogao, Michael Lawana, and Faustino Olowan for the construction of a podium car parking at the area of Ganza, in between Orchidarium and the Children’s Park and the whole stretch of the City Library.

“Go supports the idea of developing terminals in at least four strategic places within Baguio and its environs, the BLISTT, for example the former PNR area,” Rovillos said.

BLISTT stands for Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay, which comprises Baguio City and the five provinces of Benguet.

The group has over 10,000 signatures opposing plans to set up a parking lot at Burnham Park through Change.Org, an online platform for advocacies and is set to launch a people’s initiative to get the signatures on paper and present it to city officials.

Rovillos said the congressman said he will study the existing laws governing the ownership and management of Burnham Park.

“He will then talk to the authorities in the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and Tieza to help the group follow up the need to install the historical marker at Burnham Park. He will also study the Burnham Park development in the context of BLISTT law that he is pursuing at the Lower House,” Rovillos added.

Next week, the group will troop to Burnham Park in a show of solidarity to show that the park is for people and not for cars.

The morning visit of the group will call on various groups to display how the park has become a venue for sports, wellness and recreation, which does not need the invasion of a parking lot.

The group warned that if efforts to stop the building at Burnham Park will not be heeded “the city faces the likelihood of urban decay in the near future.”
