Baguio lawmaker seeks talk with Burnham parking proponents

BAGUIO Representative Mark Go is set to hold a dialogue with a city councilor and proponents of Burnham Park for its preservation.

Go will have to meet with Councilors Benny Bomogao, Michael Lawana, and Faustino Olowan, proponents of the construction of a podium car parking at Ganza Restaurant in between orchidarium and the children’s park and the whole stretch of the city library.

“I plan to meet with the proponents to the podium parking and convince them to reconsider their position and explore other options,” said Go.

Last week, over a hundred walked around Burnham park in protest of the podium parking in the public space.

The group, the Baguio we want, spearheaded the walk to show where the proposed parking structure will stand and emphasize the importance of the park for health, family and recreation.

Raymundo Rovillos, chair for the group and chancellor of the University of the Philippines said the group advocates with various causes and are now focusing on the halt of plans to set up parking building in the park.

Rovillos said signatures are now being culled to fortify the protest against the process aiming for thousands to sign the cause.

Rovillos added a letter to Mayor Maurico Domogan was sent last month asking him to veto the resolution but has been left unanswered, fearing for his approval for the project.

The group is also asserting the area is a heritage site and is part of the vision of Architect Daniel Burnham in accordance to his “beautiful city concept.”

Rovillos said plans by Go to put the parking structure at the PNR compound and Councilor Maylen Yaranon’s proposal to set up a structure at Camp Allen is being supported by the group.
