BANAUE, Ifugao -- Twenty five veterinary service providers from the 19 barangays recently completed the skills training on animal health and routinary husbandry practices.
The training conducted by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVET) aims to provide the participants knowledge on the prevention and control of animal health and to demonstrate the proper drug administration in various animal species so they may able to manage simple animal diseases and practice applicable husbandry management procedures in their respective barangays.
Ferdinand Dunuan, PVET training coordinator, said backyard livestock and poultry production is a popular activity of many households in the area for additional sources of income, providing 60 percent of the town’s supply of pork and chicken meat.
However, financial losses every year have been experienced by the animal raisers due to animal mortality and poor health condition so that a big number of chickens and pigs die due to infections which could have been prevented and controlled by technical personnel.
Compounding the problem is the fact that the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) has few livestock technicians to address the problems of the animal raisers in all the barangays. The training was one strategy to improve the livestock industry in the locality.
The participants were selected by the barangay officials of each barangay and MAO personnel. (PIA–CAR)
