Benguet State U celebrates 100 years

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet - Benguet State University (BSU) is set to celebrate its centennial year of educating not only residents of the Cordillera region but also foreign students.

With the theme “BSU at 100: Going Global: The Centennial Challenge”, president Feleciano Calora said the institution is trying its best to achieve world class standards though it might be very expensive.

Calora added the university has been improving its infrastructures, economic resources and educational services to project better future for the learners and their scholars as it remains to chase its vision of becoming a premier state university in Southeast Asia.

Since January, BSU students and personnel had undergone various seminars and workshops on environment management, good governance, technology expansion, leadership trainings and cultural events which is part of the year-long celebration.

In commemoration of its 100th year on September 27, several activities were also lined - up to celebrate the centennial which includes the unveiling of the BSU historical marker, centennial tour, Eucharistic celebration, tree planting, academic Olympic skills competition, exhibits and chains of trainings for indigenous knowledge systems and the environment favored programs.

New equipment

Vice president for research and extension Dr. Carlito Laurean meanwhile revealed a P20 million biotechnology facility for molecular biology and genomics is set to arrive soon that will be used by five faculty members.

Laurean said the machine will be used for basic research for molecular engineering and will be placed in the Research and Extension Centennial Building while other equipment to be used in soil analysis needed by farmers for sustainable agriculture and avoid exceeding chemical inputs will also be in place.

u201cMany new plant pests and diseases are emerging, so we should do research continuously and we can do that with these new laboratory facilities that we will be obtaining,” added Laurean. (Elamae Membrere)
