Bill on motorcycle, scooter license plates passed

POLICE Regional Office-Central Visayas Director Jose Mario Espino welcomes the Senate's decision to pass the bill that will require bigger license plates on motorcycles and scooters in an effort to curb crimes perpetrated by riding-in-tandems.

“Matagal na itong hinihingi ng kapulisan (The police have been asking for this),” Espino said.

With 21 votes, the Senate Bill No. 1397 or Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act, principally authored by Senator Richard Gordon, was passed on third and final reading on Tuesday, July 25.

The proposed law directs the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to issue bigger and reflectorized license plates that are readable in a distance up to 15 meters.

LTO is also mandated by the bill to devise a color scheme for every region to easily identify where the motorcycles and scooters were registered.

Espino said the bill can be a deterrent to crime. (SunStar Cebu)
