A BRITISH company is proposing to manage the city’s solid waste by processing and converting it into electric energy.
The MacKay Innotech Philippines has an exclusive technology which removes the moisture content of trash. The same technology segregates ferrous and non-ferrous metals, which could be sold for additional revenue.
Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. and MacKay Innotech, on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding where the former will provide a property where the latter will put up its processing plant.
The property should measure a little less than one hectare.
MacKay will invest $20 million for the processing plant, which could process an average of 150 metric tons of mixed waste daily.
According to James Mackay, the offer is cheaper compared to what the City Government is currently spending. He said besides providing the land for the plant and paying P1,500 per metric ton as hauling and tipping fee, the project is practically at no cost to the city.
MacKay Innotech will turn over the plant after 25 years.
In the MOU, MacKay also committed to pay for the visit of at least seven delegates from the City Government to their facility in the United Kingdom.
If the City Government finds the project acceptable, a joint venture agreement will be signed 30 days upon their return from Europe.
Both parties meanwhile agreed that if a contract is signed, they first have to secure an environmental compliance certificate. The MOU still has to be referred to the City Council for deliberation. (Rimaliza Opiña)
