Bus mishap in Tanay, Rizal kills 14 passengers

AT LEAST 14 persons were killed Monday, February 20, after a tourist bus rammed an electric post along Barangay Sampaloc in Tanay, Rizal.

The tourist bus was carrying around 50 passengers, mostly students of Bestlink College in Novaliches, on the way to a provincial resort for their camping.

Tanay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office administrative officer Bong Bati said a Harana Tourist bus with licence plate TXS 325 hit an electric post along Magnetic Hill, Peligrino Farm, Sitio Bayukan, around 8:40 a.m. that resulted in the killing of 14 people, including the driver.

He said 10 passengers were killed on the spot, while the four others died while being treated in the hospital.

Bati said the victims were brought to San Isidro Funeral Homes in Tanay while their families are being contacted.

Carlos Inofre, engineer of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said they are still validating the number of injured passengers, but said all are out of danger.

He said three injured passengers were transferred to Amang Rodriguez Medical Center, seven in Tanay General Hospital, one in Tanay Community Hospital and 17 in Rizal Provincial Hospital.

Inofre said most of the victims sustained bone fractures due to the accident.

Based on initial report, Inofre said the bus lost its brake and hit the electric post. (SunStar Philippines)
