MARLON Cabanata clinched the open title of the just-concluded 2014 Calinan Fiesta Chess Tournament held at Calinan Park, Tuesday.
Cabanata tallied 11 points in the 13-round competition, besting William Repalda and Andrian John Yap who placed second and third, respectively. Repalda earned 10.5 points while Yap had 10.
In the boys 16-under category, Wesly Jovan Magbanua of Los Amigos Elementary School (LAES) annexed the crown by registering five points after seven rounds while John Christian Pal (4.0) of Calinan National High School and fellow LAES chesser Wendell Jay Magbanua (3.0) took the next two spots.
Calinan Central Elementary School's Nove Mia Cabataña, meanwhile, captured the girls 12-under title at the expense of schoolmates Bianca Jala and Jasmine Grace Cabataña. Cabataña scored 2.5 points in five rounds while Jala had two points and Cabataña with 1.5 points.
All winnersrecieved cash prizes in the tournament organized by the Calinan Chess Club in celebration of Calinan's Fiesta that was sponsored by Congressman Isidro Ungab.
The Swiss System format tournament was sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines(NCFP). (KRP)
