Calma, 2 other Oro bets stamp class in Cabadbaran

MARY Aubrey Calma, arguably the region’s top lady netter, led the Cagayan de Oro bets’ successful campaign in the Cabadbaran City leg of the 2017 Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group Tennis Championships slated July 14 to 17 at the CLTA courts in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte.

This, even as Vaughn Spencer Codilla of Surigao City emerged as the winningest player in the Group 2 event that attracted a total of 105 participants.

Codilla surpassed the feat of his more illustrious compatriot Rupert Ohrelle Tortal when he took home two singles titles in the four-day netfest supported by Dunlop Sport as the official ball.

Codilla thrashed Emmanuel Pedrosa of San Francisco, Agusan del Norte, 6-3, 6-2 for the Under-16 (U16) boys title, then dumped another San Francisco pride Prince Bo Lastimosa, 6-2, 7-5 for the premier U18 boys crown.

Tortal crushed John Roddick Litang of Davao City, 6-1, 6-3 to pocket the U14 boys diadem.

Last year’s most bemedalled distaff campaigner Calma did not disappoint in her return to the age-group arena when she overpowered Abbygale Singcol of Butuan City, 6-2, 60 for the U18 girls jewel.

The other two Kagay-anons, Kian John Sanchez and Casey Padilla also made their presence felt.

Sanchez went to the distance to defeat the hard-fighting Al-Rasheed Lucman of Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, 2-4, 4-1, 5-3 in the unisex 10-under final. While Padilla had an easy way out in disposing of Angela Buyante of Malaybalay City, 6-2, 6-0 in the U12 girls final.

“Wala nasayang ang sakripisyo sa mga bata kay naay duha ka adlaw sa atong playdates in Cabadbaran nga ting-klase,” said the tourney’s Viz-Min area organizer Mario Inguito Craiz.

Other winners were Christian Padilla of Butuan City, Yra Monteclaro of Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte and Winona Cabardo of Davao City.

Padilla whipped Dave Hortado of San Francisco, 6-0, 6-3 in the U12 boys final; Monteclaro thumped Buyante, 6-4, 6-1 in the 14U girls final and Cabardo blasted Nanami Suzuki of Cagayan de Oro, 6-1, 6-0 in the 16U girls final.
