Cargo vessel cracks, sinks off Talisay but all 22 on it survive

A CEBU-REGISTERED cargo vessel that sailed from General Santos City to Cebu City sank near Talisay City at 6 a.m., Sunday, May 7.

Dionilet Ampil of the Cebu Coast Guard District identified the vessel as m/v Fortuner of Seen Sam Shipping Inc. in Nasipit Commercial Complex, Talamban, Cebu City. It is registered with the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina)-Central Visayas as a 1,474.32-gross tonnage vessel.

Ampil said he first learned about the accident when one of the cargo ship’s officials, Benson Go, reported it.

All the 22 crew jumped into a tugboat before the vessel finally sank, and they survived. They were transferred to another vessel the company owns, MTUG 38.

In an initial report, chief mate Frederick Alba said that the vessel’s hull started to crack at 4:30 a.m. It was not known why. The vesssel sank at 6:30 a.m.

A boom was put in place to prevent any oil spill from spreading. (EOB)
