Cause of dead seashells in Punta Taytay probed

THE Bacolod City Agriculture Office (CAO) is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the dead seashells or oysters in the coastal area of Barangay Punta Taytay.

CAO head Goldwyn Nifras said Thursday, September 29, that the livelihood of some residents in Barangay Punta Taytay were affected because of the incident.

The CAO will seek assistance from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to examine the water samples, he added.

Some residents claimed that one of the causes was the waste from a distillery in Bago City.

Nifras said they will examine the water samples first, and if results showed there is a link to the distillery, they will coordinate with the Bago City officials to address the problem.

“We will check what the cause is – either an organism or chemicals,” he added.

If the seashells were poisoned, Nifras said the problem will not only affect the area of Barangay Punta Taytay, but all coastal areas in Bacolod City. (MAP)
