Cebuanos advised to let 'Vinta' pass through before traveling south

AN OFFICIAL of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) has advised the public on Friday to delay their trips to the south and let Tropical Depression Vinta pass through before leaving their homes for the holidays.

CDRRMO chief Nagiel Bañacia said on Friday, December 22, that storm warning signals have already been raised in several cities and provinces in the southern part of the country.

In Cebu City, Bañacia said, there has been no reports of landslide or flooding incidents due to downpours brought about by Vinta.

Before he and his family left to the United States, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña shared some practical tips during a typhoon.

"I distributed flyers on this before. It's really common sense. Be practical. There's a major typhoon, here's what you have to do: you will presume there is no water and electricity," he said.

If this happens, the mayor advised the public not to buy fresh meat and consume everything in the refrigerator to avoid rotting food.

He also encouraged the use of large garbage bags in covering appliances during heavy rains.

Osmeña said the laundry should be done before water interruption occurs, and to secure flashlights and gasoline for car owners.

"These are just simple but practical tips. I'm a disaster expert," he said. (RTF/SunStar Cebu)
