Celebrities, champions gear up for Ironman today

GET ready, Cebu. The Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines event happening today is not just any sports stint. The grueling race against self, man and nature is set to start and end today at the Shangri-La's Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

Through the years, the triathlon has gathered the best and brightest of stars from all over the country.

Cebuanos Matteo Guidicelli and Paul Jake Castillo are among those expected to compete in today's event. Other big names include Bubbles Paraiso, Dyan Castillejo and Kim Atienza. The individual competition comprises a 1.9 kilometer (km) swim leg, a 90km bike leg and a 21km run. Other big names like Piolo Pascual, Gerald Anderson, Jake Cuenca, Gretchen Fullido, Enchong Dee and Kim Chiu will join the relay team event.

Fans are sure to line up the race route to catch a glimpse of their celebrity idols.

While Filipino celebrities bring on the glitz and glamor, they will merely be a part of 2,600 triathletes representing 51 countries.

Seasoned veterans Tim Reed and Dimity-Lee Duke come in as early favorites to win the race in the men's and women's divisions, respectively.

Reed clocked in at 3:51:46 last year.

More big names are expected to battle it out for the top prize: Tim Van Berkel, Mauricio Mendez, Brent McMahon, Sam Betten, Jacqueline Thisleton, Alise Selsmark, Kirra Seidel, Monica Juhart, Kerry Mulholland and Anna Eberhardt.
