Child laborers perish in Northern Samar landslide

TWO minors died after they were trapped in a landslide that hit a construction site inside an elementary school campus in Lavezares, Northern Samar, Wednesday afternoon, October 11.

The victims were identified as Jonnel Nabor and Elmer Abayon, both 17 years old and residents of Kalabog village, Victoria, Northern Samar.

Based on initial reports released by the police regional headquarters spokesperson, Chief Inspector Ma. Bella Rentuaya, the victims were working to build classrooms inside Libas Elementary School in Barangay Libas in Lavezares when the landslide occurred around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Experts said the downpour might have triggered the landslide that hit the construction site located near a hill.

The victims died, as they were covered by tons of loose soil and boulders. It took several hours for rescuers to retrieve their bodies. (PNA)
