City to begin clampdown on violators of traffic laws

CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña will today sign the executive order (EO) that will allow traffic enforcers to impound for a month vehicles that will be caught counterflowing.

“In the meantime, we will let the people be aware this is what’s going to happen (if they counterflow). I don’t want to catch anybody, I just don’t want people to be abusing,” Osmeña told reporters.

Under the EO, traffic enforcers can also apprehend motorcycle drivers who will use sidewalks.

Osmeña reiterated that violators of traffic laws will be dealt with strictly.

“We are going to be very strict about parking and traffic violations. And we hope that the people will cooperate, so we won’t get so many traffic enforcers, but right now we have to hire more traffic enforcers because we have to catch violators aside from managing traffic,” he said.

Despite his earlier announcement about the new traffic rule, Osmeña said there are still several drivers who counterflow.

“There are still plenty (of violators)... Let’s just give a little more time for people to be aware,” he said.

A violator will not only get his vehicle impounded, he will also lose his license and made to pay a fine, Osmeña said. (RVC)
