City veterinarian office conducts avian flu surveillance

THE Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet) is regularly conducting surveillance activities for Avian Influenza as part of the national program in keeping the Philippines an Avian Flu free country.

In his report to the mayor, City Veterinarian Mario Arriola said his office conducted blood sampling and tracheal swabbing last November in the villages of Manicahan, Campo Islam, Cabaluay, Vitali and Pamucutan.

Arriola said that at least 75 ducks and 49 chickens were randomly checked.

Arriola said the results were submitted to the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for examination.

It was found out that all samples were tested negative for Avian Influenza or bird flu.

He said the surveillance activities are being done twice a year covering the different districts in the city.

Avian flu, also known as bird flu and more formally as avian influenza, refers to flu caused by viruses that infect birds and make them ill.

It is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. (SunStar Philippines)
