Classes resume in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar announced that regular work and classes will resuem on Monday, October 23, as weather condition has normalized in the city.

Last week, Salazar has suspended the holding of classes (for five days) and work (for one day) as Zamboanga City has experienced inclement weather condition brought about by intertropical convergence zone and with the entry of typhoon Paolo into the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Zamboanga City has been placed under the state of calamity as storm surge and flash flood inundated 23 of this city’s 98 villages and displaced 4,385 families consisting of 21,189 individuals.

“Even so, the public is advised to remain cautious and to continue to take precautionary measures in light of climate change,” Salazar warned.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that as of 3 p.m., Sunday, October 22, Typhoon Paolo is at 1,670 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes, which is already outside PAR.

As this developed, the Zamboanga Coast Guard Station has lifted the suspension cancellation of vessel trips plying from the city to Jolo, Sulu and Bongao, Tawi-Tawi effective 4:30 p.m., Saturday, October 21.

Salazar said that the emergency status for response is also lifted as the weather condition in the city normalizes.

The mayor, however, reminded that the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils to take first response on any incident and continue work in clearing debris, garbage, felled trees and similar undertakings. (SunStar Philippines)
