Closed smelting plant undergoes rehabilitation

SAN SIMON -- The management of Wan Chiong Steel Corporation recently said the ongoing rehabilitation program implemented is part of its compliance to the environmental law.

Wan Chiong Steel Corporation is one of the two smelting plants which were recently served with cease and desist orders (CDOs) by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) due to alleged failure to comply with the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999.

To show its compliance to the DENR-EMB and to the local government, Wan Chiong Steel Corporation assistant plant manager Nelson Mann said that the management has upgraded its pollution devices that will minimize and improve the quality of smoke emitted by the plant.

He said that management has installed a dry pipe suction device which is considered the biggest among the smelting plants in San Simon town, and two dust collectors with an estimated value of P50-million each.

“Right now, hinahanap pa namin kung ano pa ‘yung pwedeng gawin para maging air tight siya at wala talagang emission o ‘yung sinasabi nila na escaping particles,” he said.

Mann said that Wan Chiong Steel Corporation is committed to addressing the pollution problems unintentionally caused by their operations.

He stressed that the management even stopped its operations voluntarily on October 2015 to assure the effective installation of the anti-pollution devices.

“Actually, nakapag-comply na talaga kami, medyo na-late lang kami sa pagsubmit ng commitment documents. But whatever that is, we are willing to comply with the DENR,” he said.
