Coastal residents alerted against disaster

THE City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) have alerted coastal area residents in Zamboanga City against natural disaster.

CDRRMO Chief Elmeir Jade Apolinario issued the warning after a storm surge destroyed seven houses along the coast of Manicahan, Zamboanga City last Sunday.

Apolinario said the storm surged occurred around 8 p.m., February 12, around 24 hours after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Surigao City.

He said no one was killed or hurt during the incident which the residents described as an abnormal occurrence since the waves were irregularly huge.

“We do not know if it is the effect of the earthquake in Surigao the night before,” he added.

Zamboanga City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has instructed Apolinario to closely coordinate with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology-Zamboanga office for the conduct of a scientific study to determine the cause of the incident as well as to check on reports of some abnormal movements at sea in the nearby island villages.
