Comelec enjoins new voters to register now

BANGUED, Abra -- Provincial Election supervisor Vanessa M. Roncal urged new voters to register for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election on Oct. 25 of this year.

Roncal said for the SK, the registration will be on Aug. 6 to 15 including Saturday and Sunday. The schedule of registration for the Barangay Elections is Aug. 1 to 10, also including weekends.

Roncal announced the Comelec municipal offices will be open on the scheduled dates for the registration from 8 in the morning until 7 p.m. for those who cannot go to the office during office hours.

For SK, qualification is 15 to 18 years old on or before Oct. 25 and a residency requirement of six months.

For the proof of identity and age, Roncal said, the community tax certificate or cedula and barangay clearance are not honored. The registrants need to present their birth certificate, a photo copy of the document may do. She also explained the basis of the residency requirement is Election Day, meaning, the registrant should have already been living in the barangay starting April 25.

Registrants for the Barangay Elections are likewise required six months residency and shall be 18 years old on or before October 25, 2010.

The registrants are also required to show proof of their age. Cedula and barangay clearances are not honored like the SK registrants.(Maritess Benas)
