Communist rebels kill 4 soldiers in Davao

ZAMBOANGA (Updated 3 p.m.) -- Suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels killed four unarmed off-duty government soldiers in the rural outskirts of Davao City on Sunday, a military official said.

Lieutenant Colonel Lyndon Paniza, Army's 10th Infantry Division spokesman, said the ambush took place around 5:30 p.m. at Sitio Cinco, Barangay Mapula, Paquibato district in Davao City.

Paniza said the soldiers were on board three motorcycles on their way back to the camp from a market when the communist rebels waylaid them.

Killed on the spot were Private First Class (PFC) Ahian Vir Dolero, PFC Marvin Lauronal, PFC Noel Sigan, all members of the Army's 60th Infantry Battalion.

The fourth fatality, whose body was found Monday morning, was identified as Private Marcelo Himaya. The rebels dragged Himaya to a rice field following the ambush and fatally shot him, Paniza said.

A pursuit operation was launched against the rebel suspects who staged the attack, Paniza said. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
