Cop disarmed after shooting drunk man

A POLICEMAN was disarmed after he shot an alleged drunk man when he responded to an alarm and scandal incident at Barangay 4, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental Monday, April 10.

Himamaylan City Police Station head Antonio Benitez said he confiscated the service firearm of Senior Police Officer 2 Edward Libacao.

Benitez said Libacao responded to a report that 32-year-old Chris Ian Mejica, who was armed with a bladed weapon, was threatening residents in the village.

The suspect also attempted to stab his mother and their neighbors.

The police officer tried to pacify the suspect, but the latter attacked and attempted to stab him several times, prompting Libacao to shoot him.

Mejica sustained a lone gunshot wound on his leg. He is facing charges for direct assault to an agent in authority.

The incident was purely self-defense, Benitez said, adding that the act was done to neutralize the suspect.

Libacao is still reporting at the police station pending investigation.
