Cops validating link of politician to Guihulngan ambush

THE Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) is validating the alleged involvement of an incumbent politician in the death of the Guihulngan City police chief killed in the ambush perpetrated by communist rebels on July 21.

Guihulngan City police chief Arnel Arpon and five others were killed in the ambush executed by the New People’s Army (NPA).

Aside from Arpon, killed were Senior Police Officer 2 (SPO2) Mecasio Tabilon, SPO2 Chavic Agosto, SPO1 Jesael Ancheta, PO2 Alvin Paul Bulandres, and PO2 Alfredo Dunque.

PRO-NIR Director Edmund Gonzales said on Thursday, August 3, that “everything is subject for validation.”

While he is not dismissing the allegations, he said they are considering all the information.

“It could be true or bogus,” Gonzales said, adding that the NPA already owned up to the ambush.

On Wednesday, some police retirees from Negros Occidental sent President Rodrigo Duterte a letter, telling him that the policemen were killed due to the campaign against illegal drugs.

The group, who identified themselves as part of the League of Retired Police Officers, claimed that Arpon opposed the expansion of the drug operations of an incumbent official in northern Negros.

They also claimed that the official pays the top leader of the rebel movement in Negros Island P100,000 every month as well spend for the medical expenses of the latter’s wife.

Also, the group said a former town mayor in the province, who is being eyed to have a post in the national government, is in bed with the NPA.

The group said they are willing to help the President in the fight against criminality and illegal drugs.
