SHOW. The Cebu United Radio & Television Artists Inc. is coming up with a fund-raising show on Nov. 30 at the Teatro Casino in Lahug this city with some of its officers and members as the performers themselves. The event is titled Pasiklap: Operitang Hilaw with my former boss Nick Ampatin directing. We used to work together for dyRF Radyo Familia during its Redemptorist Order years.
Commend. We commend the Sinulog Foundation Inc. for sustaining as an annual event what has already become one of the most-awaited entertainment fares for the general public every third week of January. For the past four years, we have seen how the Search for the Sinulog Idol has discovered and helped a number of aspiring singers achieve their dream as performers. As its emcee since 2010, we have observed up close the beauty of the event as a means to forge friendships and promote camaraderie and friendly competition between and among contestants. If only for this, the talent search should be fully supported by corporate sponsors and the general public.
Successful. Has the search produced successful contestants? Of course, yes. For the past four years, several of its competitors were able to make it big in the music arena. Some have joined show bands as professional performers while others have chosen to become solo artists. In 2010, Jacqueline Bual got the honor and privilege to become the competition’s very first grand champion. In 2011, it was Rachelle Mae Faelnar’s turn to bag the top prize. Donna Jenn Lofranco and Chingkie Maylon were chosen as grand winners in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The four of them, as well as their co-contestants continue to make waves in the entertainment world.
Audition. Now, if you are between 15 and 25 years old, male or female, and willing to be discovered, you are invited to join the search’s audition on Oct. 26 and 27, from 1-5 p.m., at the Sinulog Foundation office at the Cebu City Sports Complex where entry forms are still available. The audition will be in acapella (no accompaniment).
To give you an idea, the singing competition will be held for seven consecutive nights at the Sinulog stage inside the Fuente Osmeña Circle with different song genres every elimination night. To us, this makes the search very challenging on the part of the contestants as they have to prepare hard because the song categories change on a nightly basis.
Scholarship. What makes the contestants so lucky is the fact that they can avail themselves of a scholarship grant courtesy of the Cebu branch of the Center for Pop Music Philippines. This alone is already something big and important because they will be trained and guided by the center’s professional tutors led by branch head Jay Unchuan in terms of improving their voice and stage presence as well as eliminating their stage fright. At any rate, those who would like to join the upcoming audition may call the Sinulog Foundation office (2533700) or Soundtraxx Production Studio (09222800567) right now.
