COUNCILOR Tomas J. Monteverde IV is no longer the floor leader of the 17th Davao City Council after a revamp on chairmanship of some committees was implemented.
But Monteverde was not around during the re-shuffling on Tuesday.
Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, meanwhile, was already given a chairmanship.
Members of the City Council had an executive meeting prior to the regular session on Tuesday.
"Normal lang man ang mag re org, dugay-dugay na sab ko floor leader. Nag-leave ko kay mi arrive akong misis from abroad after one year of schooling (Re-organization is normal. I've been a floor leader for a while. I took a leave as my wife who studied abroad for a year arrived)," Monteverde told Sun.Star Davao in a text message.
Monteverde was replaced by Councilor Bernard Al-ag, former president pro-tempore, as the floor leader.
"Okay lang oy. Ang floor leader serves at the pleasure sa members (It's okay. The floor leader serves at the pleasure of the members)," Monteverde said.
He also said the re-shuffling was not about any conflict among council members.
The revamp also included replacing Councilor Bonifacio Militar by Councilor Victorio U. Advincula Jr. as assistant floor leader.
The new president pro-tempore is Councilor Karlo Bello.
Al-ag said the revamp was ordered by Vice Mayor Paolo Z. Duterte.
"This is the mid of our term. Parang gusto ata ni Vice na tagaan tanan ug committee (Vice Mayor wanted to give everyone a committee)," Al-ag said.
Mahipus, the lone legislator who was not given a single committee, now chairs committee on games and amusement.
"I still have to study the workings of that committee because this is my first time to handle that," he said.
The committees that have new chairpersons are: transportation and communication (formerly assigned to Councilor Leo Avila and now with Monteverde); rules, privileges, laws and ordinances (from Monteverde to Al-ag); peace and public safety (from Councilor Edgar Ibuyan Sr. to Councilor Nilo Abellera Jr.); environment (from Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang to Councilor Leo Avila); city-owned properties (from Militar to Ibuyan); government enterprises and privatization (from Abellera to Councilor Rene Elias C. Lopez); sub-committee on housing and subdivision development - high-end project (from Rachel Zozobrado to Militar); and sub-committee on housing and subdivision development - medium projects (from Al-ag to Advincula).
Meanwhile, Joanne Bonguyan, who previously resigned from her chairmanship on committee on information technology, was reassigned to handle it.
"It is the decision of the party and exercise of democracy," Alejandre said.
The newly assigned chairpersons for different standing committees will take oath during the regular session before Vice Mayor Duterte today, September 3. (ANC)
