Councilor proposes to get them off the streets

SKATEBOARDING, rollerblading and other similar activities on sidewalks, roadways, including national roads, might soon be prohibited in Cebu City.

This, after Councilor Sisinio Andales passed last week a proposed ordinance amending the City’s existing traffic code.

“These activities, when done in roadways and/or its sidewalks, may pose danger and hazards not only to the motorists and/or pedestrians, but also to the rollerskaters, skateboarders or rollerbladers themselves,” he said.

He pointed out that some persons, including teenagers, have been rollerskating or using similar devices in the city.

He said some do acrobatic tricks or stunts and some even hold on to moving vehicles to facilitate their cruise.

The use of these devices and the practice of these activities are already restricted as provided by the existing law approved in 1972.

Exemption

However, it only prohibits the riding of skates and other similar devices on roadways, except when crossing a street.

“When crossing, such person shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to pedestrians,” the law states.

The councilor said there is a need to prohibit the activities on all roadways, including national roads and sidewalks, to avoid accidents.

The council referred Andales’ proposed ordinance to the committee on laws for review and recommendation.
