Cremation area eyed at Burgos cemetery

THE City Government of Bacolod is planning to find an area for cremated remains at the Burgos or North Public Cemetery.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia said Wednesday, November 15, he will check if it is possible, considering that some of the mausoleum owners have already stopped using their private areas.

“Hopefully, we can convince them to give up their lot and transfer the bones of their loved ones to a memorial park and donate the lot to the City Government,” he added.

Leonardia noted that there are cities that have already started an area for cremated remains.

He said he will meet with some city mayors to discuss the project.

“We will study this so that we will have an area for the cremated remains and we only need a small area,” the mayor added.

Leonardia had earlier directed City Administrator John Orola to look into the status of the Burgos Public Cemetery.

The mayor said they will determine if there is a need to improve, rehabilitate, or close the cemetery.

“We have some options to improve the cemetery and a thorough study should be conducted,” he said.

Leonardia said the City Government is also open to buy a lot for new public cemetery and to develop the Barangay Handumanan Public Cemetery to reduce the number of burials at the Burgos facility.
