Curly hair, don’t care!

THE sun’s out and summer waves are in - which means beach waves on the hair and curly tresses are the trend. Get those effortless looking beach waves using absolutely no tools nor chemicals by following my tips.

Using no chemicals, tools or heat, this is, for me, the most natural hairdo one can achieve. The best part is you won’t need to brush your hair at all – just finger-comb it.

My secret? Tie it up in a twist bun.

I used to have really unruly and wavy hair, the kind that elders refer to as “buhaghag.” On busy days, I would twist and gather my hair up into a bun and keep it tied the whole day. I did this every day.

Little did I know that the many, many days that I kept my hair up in a bun would be my ultimate hair-saver. My “buhaghag” hair seemed to have found its natural inclination which I never noticed – it wanted to curl.

Getting curly and healthy hair is about using the right products. After trying out many hair products from different brands, I learned that my hair – specifically my curls – are at its prime when I use these three products from my go-to brand, Human Heart Nature: 1) Natural strengthening shampoo in soothing aloe; 2) Natural conditioner in lush vanilla; and 3) Sunflower beauty oil.

Here are three easy steps to get effortless looking curly hair naturally:

1) Soak your hair in sunflower beauty oil every night before bed. If you’re just beginning to curl your hair, it’s best to twist your hair up in a bun after applying the oil and sleep with the bun on. The sunflower oil nourishes hair from the inside. Step 3 would break your hair strands if it’s dry because it makes it difficult for moisture to reach the ends, so using oil is a must.

2) In the morning, wash the sunflower oil off with shampoo and conditioner. The strengthening shampoo lessens hair fall, which you will inevitably have plenty of when your hair grows long. It also keeps individual strands thick and healthy.

The lush vanilla moisturizing conditioner, meanwhile, balances the moisturizing effect of the sunflower beauty oil because this conditioner is very light.

Curls are difficult to achieve on heavy strands so avoid using creams and conditioners that make your hair heavy.

Also avoid straightening shampoos or shampoos that are too bubbly as these usually give hair an instant “smoothening” effect but strips your hair of its natural moisture.

3) Lastly, after bathing, twist your hair up in a bun when it’s about 70% dry. Keep it this way for an hour or so. Let it down to air dry and then tie it up again. Repeat this several times a day. Hair is more malleable when it’s not that dry, and this helps spread the curls in many areas in your hair to make it look messy and natural.

I recommend using the plastic spiral hair tie because it adjusts its tightness according to the thickness of your hair. The spirals also leave little to no dents in the part of the hair that was kept tied as opposed to using the regular kind.

Now, remember that curly hair doesn’t happen overnight, so you have to be patient. If you want faster results, try Beach Born’s Sea Salt spray. Spray it on before twisting your hair up in a bun. You’ll get beach waves afterwards.

When your hair is at your best, you are at your most confident state. So try out my tips and see if curly hair and beach waves can be your thing this summer!
