Davao environment office vows to stop leachate spill

THE Davao City Environment and Natural Resources (Cenro) assured it will rehabilitate the impounding pond in New Carmen, Tugbok Sanitary Landfill and stop the leachate from spilling into the Matina Pangi River by December this year.

Supervising Environment Specialist of the Environmental Waste Management Division of Cenro Dolores Remojo said that they have already cleaned up six stages filtration facility in the area and enhanced the impounding pond by securing it with perimeter fence.

“We borrowed the backhoe from City Engineer’s Office to divert the leachate spillage to the filtration pond down to the impounding pond,” she said.

Remojo said that the office purchased one unit of submersible pump which will pump out the leachate from the impounding pond back to the cell or landfill.

“By December this year there is a rehabilitation to be undertaken on the existing landfill and part of it will be the repair of the impounding pond, with this the issue of leachate will be properly addressed,” Remojo said.

She added that submersible pump she mentioned arrived weeks ago after it has been requested sometime in the first or second quarter this year after the existing one conked out.

The issue on leachate spillage has been brought to the attention of the council last week.

Remojo in a separate interview said that Cenro together with the City Planning and Development Office has already identified areas for another landfill facility in Gumalang, Tugbok and another area near the current landfill but it still have to be inspected by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environment Management Bureau.
