Davao traffic office to address pedestrian complaints

THE City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) had already taken a move and coordinated with various offices to address the pile of pedestrian complaints for unmaintained overpasses and insufficient pedestrian lanes following the start of the implementation of the Anti-Jaywalking Ordinance Thursday, December 1.

In an interview with SunStar Davao on Thursday, CTTMO Executive Service Officer Charlotte Parba said they already sought the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Protection to clean the dirty and stinky overpasses, reasons that pedestrians cited that kept them from using the overpasses.

“We have already requested the BFP to clean and wash it,” she said.

She also cited one of the reasons why these overpasses turned out messy is the fact that pedestrians frequently use it and hence, their presence there attract some vendors. These overpasses are also being used as shelter by some homeless citizens who sleep in those areas.

If pedestrians will cross the area, people will be reluctant to pee and litter there, she said.

“I hope that everybody will use it para mahiya yong iba na magkalat (so the others will be ashamed to litter),” she said.

She also urged the assistance of the barangay officials and City Environment and Natural Resources Office in maintaining its cleanliness.

She added CTTMO had already started the rehabilitation of pedestrian lanes in some areas, especially those with faded paints prior to their announcement of the implementation of ordinance.

“Hindi lang naming masabay-sabay (We cannot do them simultaneously) since we are using thermo plastic and it was not easy to apply like a mere paint,” she said.

They also plan to augment the existing pedestrian lanes to address the woes of the public who demands for nearer pedestrian lanes. However, she said that they don’t have a target yet on how many pedestrian lanes will be created.

They are now focusing on places that have an influx of pedestrians but have no available pedestrian lanes.

“Yes, we will add more pedestrian lanes,” she assured.
