De Leon: The real ‘Lodi and Petmalu’ has been finally found?

CONSIDERING that our country is one of the happiest corners in the world, its people are insanely creative when it comes to spontaneous and contagious humor. We Filipinos, despite all the toxicity when we think of the society's current issues and political struggle, still take pride in this remarkable quality, hence creating our own social media trend outside foreign influences.

Slangs come and go, and today's current language fad is the great come back of “Tadbaliks,” the reversal or mixing up of syllables to recreate a word.

As I've mentioned to you a few weeks back, this crazy trend started during the 70's to 90's pop culture. It was even accordingly dubbed "Baliktad Tagalog" and the "Hippoe culture" was said to have started it all.

And since you can't get enough of this, here are more interesting trends that you're probably missing out on your news feed:

1. Did you know: A little #throwback into the history of the Philippines, the national hero Marcelo Del Pilar reversed his name? His surname Del Pilar seemed to have been stylized in Tadbaliks as his pen name “Plaridel.”

2. Most popular nowadays are the words "lodi," "petmalu" and "werpa" which translate to idol, malupet and power, respectively. Consequently, two parties are seeking to register the colloquial terms as their trademarks to have exclusive use of these in events, social media and retails and services.

If signed by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), the action will ensure the applicants' exclusive use of the words for their stated purpose in the next ten years. This is in line with Republic No. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code.

Now, brace yourself.

3. While Pinoys are fond of complementing each other with these, netizens were #shookt (it means really affected and shaken up by it) when they found out that there's a real man named Petmalu Lodhi and he is not from the Philippines.

Yes! An image of a passport of a Pakistani man started to circulate online since November 16, 2017. But whether it's real or not, people in the social media community cannot contain their shock and heaps burst out laughing.
