AN EXPERT from the Netherlands will lead the two-day capability building on meat processing for hog raisers in Negros Occidental on November 7 and 8 at the First Academy of Skills and Technology in Bacolod City.

The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) has tapped Peter Koning, a member of the Project Uitzending Managers (PUM) which provides free services like sharing of expertise to requesting countries, organizations and provinces like Negros Occidental.

The training will gather about 50 participants from 10 hog raisers associations in the province.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena yesterday said the training is aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of Negrenses on meat processing as a potential means of livelihood.

Decena said that Koning is one of more than 2,000 PUM members worldwide working for the development of communities in different countries.

Other skills to be taught by the expert are processing of by-products like blood and lamb cut, among others, he added.

PVO records showed that about 76 percent of meat processors, hog raisers, paravets, and representatives of different local government units (LGUs) in the province have already availed of the same training.

Of which, some 25 percent have continuously done meat processing as their means of livelihood, it added.
