Duterte appoints online supporter as DSWD assistant secretary

A KNOWN supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte on social media has been appointed assistant secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

In a press statement released on Monday, Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo confirmed the appointment of Lorraine Badoy, a doctor and a human rights advocate, as the one assigned to implement the medicine assistance to drug dependents who seek rehabilitation.

“We are happy to confirm news that Dr. Badoy will be joining us in the DSWD. She will be focal person of the Office Secretary in implementing the medicine assistance to drug dependents undergoing rehabilitation. President Rodrigo Duterte has allocated P1 billion for this,” Taguiwalo said.

“Asec. Lorraine is a doctor of medicine and has been assisting Yolanda-affected families for several years now in her private capacity. She brings to DSWD not only her medical skills but a spirit of service to the people marked by compassion and free from corruption,” she added.

Badoy is the daughter of former Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Ancleto Badoy, who chaired the antigraft court’s third division that heard the plunder case of convicted then-president-and-now-Manila-Mayor Joseph Estrada over gambling money.

Badoy also took to Facebook her appointment, which she described as “a privilege, a duty, [and] a sacred trust.”

She said she was grateful that she got a position in the government under the term of Duterte, giving her the opportunity to serve the public, especially those in the marginalized sector.

“Today though, I start a new chapter in my life as public servant at the DSWD and where I have a clear shot at changing some of those lives for better and with resources I’ve never had at my disposal all those years I did my thing,” Badoy said.

Taguiwalo is confident that Badoy could perform well in the DSWD, “given her track record of compassionate service and commitment to help the poor.” (SunStar Philippines)
