Duterte leads destruction of 30 smuggled luxury cars

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte led Tuesday, February 6, the destruction of around 30 smuggled luxury cars during the 166th founding anniversary of the Bureau of Customs (BOC).

About 20 vehicles worth P61.626 million were destroyed by a bulldozer at the BOC grounds in Manila.

Ten other luxury cars were simultaneously destroyed at the ports of Davao and Cebu.

Among the cars destroyed in Manila were Audi, BMW, Corvette Stingray, Jaguar, and Lexus.

Duterte earlier announced that seized high-end vehicles would be crushed to deter car enthusiasts from resorting to smuggling.

The President's way of dealing with smuggled luxury cars is different from the previous practice of putting these up for auction.

His new policy is aimed at vehemently warning smugglers to end their practice of illegally bringing in vehicles and purchasing them at auction.

"Don't sell it because the situation will remain the same. They'll still be the only ones who will benefit from it and they'll be the only ones who wait for the next auctions. It's legal and cheap because it's acutioned," he said in a speech delivered in Davao City on February 1.

"So what I will do is I will have them bulldozed this Tuesday (February 6). You keep on importing, fine. I'll bulldoze those everyday," he added. (SunStar Philippines)
