Editorial: #ThinkBeforeYouShare

THINK before you share.

This may look like a simple reminder but it is very relevant today with the advent of social media.

The #ThinkBeforeYouShare was among the hashtags that were used during Wednesday night's Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) 2017, which is aimed at recognizing quality work by media practitioners in broadcast, print, and digital media.

In this year's GMEA, Globe and its partners highlighted the need for the mainstream media to be the defenders of truth by setting themselves as an example through the writing or broadcast of quality journalism work.

However, #ThinkBeforeYouShare does not only apply to the media practitioners but also to the general public.

Nowadays, we see the rampant spread of fake news, which has threatened the reporting of media outlets as these so called "news" are being shared by many citizens. This causes confusion among Filipinos as to what is the truth and what is not.

When we think before we share, in a way, we are doing our community a servive or a favor by being responsible social media citizens.

A simple practice we can do to prevent the spreading of fake news is by verifying the articles that we may want to share by cross checking with other media outlets or verified sources.

Through verifying the posts that we share, we are able to spread correct facts and avoid confusing others.

Also before sharing articles or social media posts, ask yourself, will this benefit the community? Am I spreading lies or the truth? Will the sharing of this post or article help others or not?

#ThinkBeforeYouShare is a simple reminder but may impact the people who follow you positively or negatively.
