Energizer Night run safety worries top runner

CEBU running queen Mary Grace Delos Santos has mixed emotions on her second run in the Energizer night run this Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the Parkmall.

Delos Santos said she is worried about the safety of the race route since the reclamation area is known for speeding cars.

“I am excited about the night run because it’s different from the regular early morning races that we have. But I am worried about the safety of the race route.”

“I hope they will have many marshals because the race starts when the traffic in Mandaue is at its peak. At 8:30 p.m., medyo traffic pa na sa Mandaue and labi na ang mga sakyanan sa reclamation kusog kaayo managan,” said Delos Santos, who extended her dominance from Cebu to Malaysia in the Standard Chartered Marathon two weeks ago.

The run has already closed its registration after attracting 2,500 runners.

Delos Santos will be joining the women’s open 10k run division.

She joined the midnight run event last December, where she came out the champion of the women’s division.

However, GMA-7 General Manager Ann Marie Tan assured Delos Santos and the rest of the participants the organizing body has made all the precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incident.

“Our target number of runners was only 2,000 but we reached 2,500. We were overwhelmed by the response. The reason we closed the registration early was for security and safety,” said Tan.

Tan added the Mandaue traffic enforcers are in all full force to help them with the safety. “There are even enforcers who will cancel their days off to assist us in the night run,” added Tan.

“We are all set and ready to go,” said Tan. The race will feature a 10K, 5K, 3K run.
