Eng'g study for broadband program in Davao done

ENGINEERING study for the 162 national government offices and state universities and colleges (SUCs) in Davao City had been completed as preparation for the National Broadband Program of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

DICT Davao Region Technical Coordination and Support Division Chief engineer Leo B. Ugto said one of the programs that DICT is looking forward to fully implement within the year is the National Broadband Program which creates its own network through fiber-optic to be used by government offices and SUCs nationwide.

“In Davao City, we have now completed the detailed engineering study for the 162 national government offices. Documents were prepared for bidding so hopefully all national government offices including SUCs will be connected through fiber-optic,” said Ugto.

As this is a nationwide program, Ugto said the regional offices’ role is to provide the DICT central office of the basic information of the government offices located in the city and provinces. Central office would need to know whether the buildings where the offices are located are government-owned or rented. From there, DICT regional offices will have to design and plot the fiber-optic to be sent to Manila.

As this program would help with faster and more efficient transactions with the government, Ugto said they discourage disconnection of the offices’ existing internet connection with private telecommunication companies as it would still be helpful as a backup.

He said they are hoping for a bigger bandwidth of about 10 mbps minimum with the implementation of the National Broadband Program.

“The status of ICT right now in the Philippines is not quite good. In order to improve, we’ll have a government intervention. This program will help us have faster and more efficient government office transactions,” said Ugto.
