Environment advocates call for organic farming

ENVIRONMENT advocates urged all big-time famers to stop using chemicals on their crops and for people to consume organic food as part of their celebration of the World Food Day (WFD) today.

With the theme: "Climate is changing, food and agriculture must too," Masipag Mindanao regional coordinator Leo Fuentes said that the organization calls for climate justice along with other environment advocates.

Fuentes alleged that communities are vulnerable to climate disasters due to the effects of the reckless and greedy practices of some chemical companies.

Fuentes added that some other big chemical companies are responsible for polluting the environment, destroying the farmlands, and damaging the food security.

Meanwhile, Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spray president Dagohoy Magaway also expressed his opposition to the production of genetically modified food while drawing attention to its impact on organic agriculture.

In support to the campaign against the Monsanto firm, a giant agro-chemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation and other chemical farming firms, Magaway slammed the recent Supreme Court decision which disapproved Davao City's ordinance on the Aerial Spray ban.

"Despite the El Niño being a natural phenomenon, this year's experience with the increasing temperature and mono-cropped vegetation, adverse effects in our farmlands multiplied," Fuentes said.

The environment advocates will also mount a People's Tribunal against Monsanto as they will celebrate the WFD at Rizal Park on San Pedro Street in Davao City.

They will also have a film viewing at the Cinematheque Davao.
