Espedilla: Problematic Diabetic (Part 4)

(Foreword: This is the continuation of our letter-response to Nick, the Diabetic regarding his concerns on choosing the good habits for diabetics.)

DEAR Nick, the Diabetic,

Now, here are more stuff which you think could help you in your battle against Diabetes. But, the truth is they are really pushing to the edge of the games. And as long as the battle is not over yet, the game is not yet over. So, let’s move on for more.

6. Getting rid of all those high-fat foods

Fat is not at all that terrible. As a matter of fact, a little fat is good as long as it is of the right kind. You have to limit saturated fats which are found in your meat and dairy products and say NO to transfats completely. Transfats are those fats found in margarine, butter, breads, cake, cookies, salty snacks, whole milk, animal fats and ground beef. What you should get are those monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These are healthy fats. Monounsaturated fats are those found in olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, safflower oil and sesame oil, while polyunsaturated fats are those found in plant and animal foods such as salmon, vegetable oils, and some nuts and seeds.

As a matter of fact, there are some high-fat foods that can benefit some people with diabetes. They have to know that when they eat nuts along with foods that has higher carbohydrates, this can prevent their blood sugar levels from spiking up. There are also other studies which had shown that those who eat avocados have lesser chances of getting metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions which includes increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. These conditions come up together in a band and increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

So, don’t be afraid of fats, just be sure, they’re just right. And of course, just keep those portions small. Don’t gobble, you might choke...he he. Remember those calories can add up so fast without you knowing it. The secret is: be cautious with the numbers.

Oh, oh, I would have wanted to talk more, but, again, we are running of space for now, so, let me then, continue this in my next issue. Until then again!
