Ex-soldier shot dead in Murcia

A FORMER trooper of the Philippine Army was gunned down by two unidentified men on a motorcycle at Barangay Amayco in Murcia, Negros Occidental Tuesday morning.

Killed was Benito Miparanum, 45, of Purok Kalubihan in the said village.

Senior Inspector Ronald Santillan, town police chief, said Miparanum and his wife brought their daughter to school around 7:30 a.m.

He was waiting for his wife to join him when the assailants fired at him at close range. His wife tried to stop the gunmen, but she was threatened by the assailants.

Miparanum died on the spot due to head injuries. His wife was unharmed.

Police recovered from the scene six fired bullets and two slugs of a .45 caliber pistol.

The assailants escaped on board a motorcycle parked a few meters away.

Before the incident, the gunmen had coffee in a nearby store.

"The suspects monitored his activities," Santillan said.

Santillan said they are eyeing family conflict as the motive, adding that the victim had received threat, based on the statement of his wife.
