Fajardo wins 2nd MVP title

WITH the way things are going in his career, Cebuano slot man June Mar Fajardo may need a bigger cabinet for his collection of trophies.

The San Miguel center, who played for the University of Cebu in college, won his second Most Valuable Player title in the league after earning 37.1 statistical points for the season. He bested Jayson Castro, who had 29.09 and fellow Cebuano and former University of the Visayas center Greg Slaughter of Ginebra.

Fajardo, who said he prefers a team title to individual awards, is the first player to win back-to-back MVP awards since Danny Ildefonso.

For this season, his third in the league, the Cebuano big man averages 17.38 points and 12.75 rebounds per game. He also has 1.74 blocks per outing.

Aside from the MVP award, Fajardo also received the Best in Sportsmanship Award and was named to the Best Defensive team along with Gabe Norwood, Calvin Abueva, Ping Excimiano and Chriss Ross.

He also made it to the Mythical 5 selection with Castro, Slaughter, San Miguel teammate Arwind Santos and Paul Lee.

Ageless veteran Asi Taulava made it to the second mythical team along with Ranidel de Ocampo, Abueva, Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle. Romeo also won the Most Improved Player award, while Pringle was named Rookie of the Year.

Fajardo could also bring home his first PBA title as the San Miguel Beermen were set to face the Alaska Aces last night in Game 4 of the PBA Governors Cup finals with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
