'Ferdie' puts Ilocos Region on 'blue alert' status

LAOAG CITY -- Strong winds, along with moderate to heavy rainfall, in various parts of the four provinces in Ilocos have put residents and concerned officials in the region on "blue alert" level.

In Solsona town, residents in Barangays San Marcelino, Baresbes and San Francisco have to take the long route when going to the town proper due to a not passable provincial road in Barangay Laureta that has been washed out again due to heavy rainfall.

The access road has been damaged during the previous typhoons that hit Ilocos Norte and until now, the repair is not yet completed.

As Typhoon "Ferdie" makes its way out of the Philippines area of responsibility, classes from pre-school to high school in the entire province of Ilocos Norte remains suspended on Wednesday.

Regional Director Melchito Castro of the Office of Civil Defense in Region warned the public, especially those living in highly vulnerable areas, to watch out for the effects of rain and very strong winds. Moderate to heavy rain is expected with the 600-kilometer diameter of the typhoon.

As of this posting, transportation, communication and power lines, including the Laoag airport and Currimao seaport, are under normal operations. (PNA)
