Fetalvero: Of Buddha and business

IN THIS time of uncertainties, with the stock market at its lowest last week, is it time to reassess our choices? In order to avoid getting hurt, Lloyd Field, who has a Doctorate in Philosophy collated Buddha’s Guiding principles with the intention of developing within the individual sufficient skills to successfully detach from mental states of desiring, craving, and aversion that cause dissatisfaction. In skillful understanding, the author underlined the need for interpretation of ourselves, others and our organization. “An understanding of who we truly are leads us to observe the actions we undertake. This understanding is the foundation of the choices we make and the goals we establish,” Field wrote.

In punctuating Buddha’s philosophy, Field issued some kind of warning: “A highly competitive and driven corporate leader who sees the world as ‘there for the taking’ would likely want to possess far in excess of need (greed), want to increase market share and put competitors out of business (hatred), and take actions based on the illusion of permanence and self-existence (ignorance).” He then continued to explain that skillful understanding is about seeing our own intentions and actions which requires a comprehensive appreciation of the ethics of our thoughts when we had those choices.

Lloyd who studied Buddhism, states that what he did had consequences. “Whenever you decide to do something, think it through, because in the end you are responsible for the results.” He then added: “Karma is the result of our actions.” From a Buddhist perspective, he pointed out that skillful behavior is based on the Law of Cause and Effect.

In my recent experience with someone who tried to break every rule in the book, I was thankful for the opportunity to present to her the various scenarios he or she may be facing if he or she continues to be in what I viewed as a precarious situation.

Everybody has dreams. But in the pursuit of those dreams, the Buddhist skillful understanding has to be considered. This is what I have learned from reading the book entitled Business and the Buddha.
